The Eye Book
by Dr. Seuss (writing as Theo. LeSieg 1968*) illustrated by Joe Mathieu 1999
What a great honor to illustrate a book by the great Dr. Seuss! He was truly one of the great geniuses of children's books!
I met Dr. Seuss at a party to celebrate his winning the Laura Ingalls Wilder Life achievement Award in 1980. The party took place at the Time Life building in New York and was attended by a huge crowd from the publishing world. A big band played Ellington. Big Bird was there in costume! So was the Cat in the Hat! When I was introduced to him by our mutual art director at Random House, Cathy Goldsmith, I was stunned that not only did he know who I was, he knew what I was working on (the Sesame Street Dictionary)!
Illustrating this book felt very natural to me!
*(Dr. Seuss's real name was Theodor Geisel. On books he wrote to be illustrated by others, he used the name Theo. LeSeig, which is Geisel spelled backward.)
